  • Rear Axle carrier Mounting Bolts

    Evening Gents

I am in the process of overhauling the rear end of my coupe. Will put a journal up at some point (with plenty of pictures for Indy ).

So far i have got the exhaust, trailing arms and diff off but having a little difficulty with the rear axle carrier.

The bolts that hold the push rods to the car (number 4 on the picture) are very rusty. Does anyone know what type of bolts they should be i.e Inner Hex or torx bolts. Peet and another mate thinks they are torx but im not convinced they look like hex bolts to me. I have tried one with torx but it just spins, there Past it !

Realoem qoutes hex but from past experiance its not always 100% correct

Has anyone done this job or had any trouble getting these bolts off. At the moment im just soaking them for a few night with WD-40. Tried shocking it with a extension bar and a rubber hammer but no luck ! ! !

any help and advise would be apreciated

    Cheers

    Adz

Mine definately look like hex sockets!:

ETA: I would try using a "socket" type allen key and beat in into the bold with a proper hammer, this will make sure that it's properly seated and also shock the rust about a bit!!

Another idea would be to try to get at the other end of the bolt by removing the outer sills and possibly some of the structural sill too - looks like you're in for a bit of welding anyway!!

I've done this job and if the bolts are OEM, they're hex (6mm?). They can be awkward to access particularly on the offside because the fuel pipe is in the way, and you should use a decent hardened hex bit in a socket set on an extension (if necessasry) to be sure that your hex bit is straight in line. Good luck!

I was going to say that they're probably 6mm, Exdos has confirmed this, so if yours are eaten away/chewed up, you could also try beating a 1/4" (6.35mm) hex bit in!!

Replace them with regular 13mm head bolts when you get them out!

An Impact Driver should help you avoid rounding those. Borrow or buy one if you can (they're pretty cheap, and always useful: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teng-Id515-P...0031783&sr=8-1)
