  • Rear subframe strengthening

Can someonw please recommend garages that will strengthen the subframe?
What cost am I looking at?

I did look at the other threads but could not find a list of recommended places.

Previous owner of mine had it done at "XS Racing" but I can't find any contact details for them anymore - not sure if they go under a different name now...

Funnily enough I spoke to a garage about this just yesterday as I'm looking to have mine thoroughly inspected this year - the rubber in the diff bush has partially torn so while I'm getting that squeaky thing replaced I might as well look at getting the whole lot checked out and reinforced if necessary.

My local indie also service an M Roadster and mentioned that the owner had the boot reinforced by Cracknell's Garage (based near Harrogate area). They've done a good looking job apparently according to my indie, though I've not seen the work myself.

I phoned Cracknell's and it turns out that they've done at least 2 M Roadsters - one using a Randy Forbes kit, the other using kit that they've made themselves.

          Cost-wise they've quoted £1200 + diff bush

I'll also be speaking to another couple of outfits (more track/race car focussed) so will post up once I've further info from them

The Randy Forbes kit looks good but is quite pricey to get over here to the UK and can be more or less replicated by most skilled fabricators.

Anyone checking their boot floor just another warning that to fully check the spot welds etc you have peel back the sound deadening and seam sealer, mine looked fine until I did that and then I saw a few spot welds starting to go.

You can also buy a new stock diff ear assembly from BMW for about £30 if you want to replace the old one like for like or perhaps the new one is slightly thicker

I found this post from bimmerforums (and by one poster) useful, the animation makes a lot of sense to me

Agreed...and underpins the argument for polybush subframe mounts coupled with an oem differential mounting bush

Been quoted £4200 by Redish for the Randy Forbes Z3 Boot Floor Kit supply and fit. They probably do other strengthening work I'd assume for that price.

I would guess (having just had my sills refurbished by them) that they would completely strip, reinforce and then finish to better-than OEM to protect it all. The attention to detail is spectacular if you can afford it!

Track Torque (restoration and race/track specialists) coming in at just under £2500

I’ll be contacting a BMW specialist race prep outfit tomorrow also for comparison

Life’s a bit cheaper up north

that's interesting. What do Track Torque do for strengthening?

Let us know how you get on with the other company.

I’ve not spoken to them since the quote came back but will be having a chat with them to clarify. I sent through links to the guides that have been shared on here detailing the work required for reference so I assume they’ve quoted on that basis
